Acer launching thin, Calpella-based notebooks this summer? 26 February 2010 at 7:57 am by admin

The progression of ever-faster notebooks seems to have dwindled, but the quest for thinner and lighter goes on. Acer is said to be finding the balance between those two goals with its next suite of thin performers, starting with a range of mid- and high-end portables based on Intel’s Calpella series of processors, the Nehalem spin-off that we haven’t heard much about lately. Sizes are said to be 13-, 14-, and 15-inches, all will be manufactured by Wistron, and all said to be one inch thin at their thinnest point — hopefully not much thicker elsewhere if they want to turn heads.

+ Microsoft Hohm SDK is available to third parties, first devices to hit this summer By admin 25 February 2010 at 8:41 pm and have No Comments

There are already plenty of solutions for monitoring your power consumption, particularly with Google’s relatively recent PowerMeter ecosystem , but if you want to do things the Microsoft way, Microsoft’s Hohm is about to get third party device friendly. An SDK has been recently released to manufacturers, and we’re supposed to expect the first compatible products by the summer. Interestingly, Microsoft has also mentioned that it “might” even get into the game of energy hardware at some point.

+ Sony confirms plans for consumer-friendly 3D cameras By admin 22 February 2010 at 8:43 am and have No Comments

If you had any doubt that Sony was getting all hot and bothered by the prospects of 3D everything in the very near future, a recent interview with Digital Photography Review should settle that. Masashi Imamura, President of Personal Imaging and Sound at Sony, said that the company is focused on tackling the third dimension on every front, and while we already know it is meeting the needs of Hollywood, with cameras like the HFC Comfort-3D and the HDC-F950, now comes the focus on Joe Consumer, specifically referencing Fuji’s Real 3D W1 .

+ Volvo announces touchscreen-based rear seat entertainment system By admin 16 February 2010 at 6:11 pm and have No Comments

Volvo unfortunately isn’t providing any pictures of it just yet, but the automaker has announced a new rear set entertainment system that might just make those actually driving the vehicle a little envious. Dubbed the RSEi-500, the system is based around a touchscreen of unspecified size, and packs a 500GB hard drive for media storage, a DVD player, USB and A/V inputs, and built-in WiFi to let you pair it with a Sprint OverDrive or other mobile hotspot (or your home network when you’re parked in the garage, for that matter).

+ PS3 3D video output turns up in 3.20 debug firmware By admin 14 February 2010 at 7:40 pm and have No Comments

We’d already heard that the PS3 wouldn’t need anything more than a simple firmware update to make the jump to 3D, and it looks like we now have the first evidence of that very firmware update. It’s obviously not ready for public consumption just yet, but a debug build of the 3.20 firmware is apparently now making the rounds among developers, and it quite clearly includes a “3D Video Output” option in the settings — as evidenced by this image courtesy of VG247 .

+ Sony says PS3 supply will be ‘tight’ over the coming months By admin 12 February 2010 at 6:02 pm and have No Comments

We’re guessing things won’t quite rise to the level of shortages since during the Wii’s heyday, but it looks like Sony is now sending a small word of caution to any potential PlayStation 3 buyers. As Joystiq reports, Sony’s senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, says that while the company is working hard to meet consumer interest, “demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months.” As you’ll recall, this follows some surprisingly strong sales for the PS3 during the holiday season (when it outsold the Xbox 360), although console sales in general expectedly slowed considerably down in January. As with Joystiq , we haven’t yet heard any first-hand reports of the PS3 being hard to find at retail, but feel free to let us know in comments if you’re running across any local shortages
